Bowmanville began as the Village of Darlington Mills
in the valley just south of where
the Vanstone Mill is.

Ross Tilley's grandfather W. E. Tilley, married Selena Vanstone, the daughter of the owner of Vanstone Mill.

W. E. Tilley was the District School Inspector for Durham and Northumberland Counties. He lived in nearby Tyrone.
