One of the greatest challenges faced by any writer is formulating a thoughtful response to the critical question: "Why?"

During a fundraising tour in North America, renowned British mountaineer Leigh-Mallory was asked why he sought to climb Everest. Though unconventional for an adventurer of his stature, his now-classic response—"Because it’s there."—was first quoted in the March 18, 1923 issue of the New York Times. Today, it remains perhaps the most recognized mountaineering remark, noted for its directness and subtle implication of determination and idealism.

The rationale behind creating this website and documenting the story of Dr. Ross Tilley—a personal tribute—is shaped by three key factors. Sixty years ago, I had the privilege of working under Dr. Tilley’s supervision as a surgical resident in the University of Toronto’s Gallie Course. That year imparted lessons beyond the technical aspects of surgery, emphasizing the integration of compassion and humility within clinical practice.

In 2006, Dr. Tilley received the distinguished honor of induction into the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame, an achievement that, regrettably, went largely unnoticed by both aviation professionals and the wider public.

More recently, nearly two years ago, colleagues and I were inspired by a compelling presentation delivered to our historical society by Reginald “Crash” Harrison, a 101-year-old RCAF WWII pilot. We discovered that Flight Lieutenant Harrison belonged to the esteemed Guinea Pig Club and had undergone surgery performed by Dr. Tilley at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, West Sussex, UK. in the treatment of burns sustained in one of his four crashes.

This encounter prompted a renewed exploration of pivotal moments in Dr. Tilley’s life and career, both on a professional and personal level, leading to their documentation for broader dissemination. While Dr. Tilley’s professional achievements have been thoroughly recognized within the field of plastic surgery, this investigative journey has revealed several previously overlooked details regarding his personal life’s journey and his professional contributions and outstanding accomplishments.
